1st MET-RhET is held in conjunction with the 16th ArgDiaP Conference

The MET-RhET workshop is meant as a meeting of specialists in rhetoric and of all those interested in the culture of communication in persuasive contexts. The topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Boundaries between rhetoric and eristic: theoretical and methodological issues
  • Methods of distinguishing rhetoric and eristic in public discourses (politics, science, education, medicine, media)
  • Axiology of communication: methods of rhetoric and methods of eristic
  • Rhetorical literacy as a weapon in the era of eristic: the practical methods of debunking fake news
  • Genres as formats of argumentation (with special regard to conflicts and controversies)
  • Debate as a rhetorical genre: problems of argumentation
  • Dispute in the public sphere (political, ideological, scientific, philosophical dispute)
  • Rhetoric vs. Eristic
  • Communication as design

We invite to submit proposals of presentations whose aim is to unveil practical consequences of theoretical distinctions. The extended abstracts should be submitted by 06 July 2018 (for more information, see below). The full versions of papers from the workshop will be peer-reviewed and published as a thematic issue of a peer reviewed, internationally renown journal of argumentation (details to follow soon).

MET-RhET is organised by the Polish Rhetorical Society in cooperation with the ArgDiaP organisation. It takes place in Warsaw at the Institute for Philosophy & Sociology at the Polish Academy of Sciences (IFiS PAN).

Title: The force of rhetoric 

Abstract: Eristic performances are competitive; they succeed by generating and channelling civic strife. This suggests that in contrast, rhetoric ought to be cooperative–a dialogue among civic friends pursuing the common good. If so, we’d have reason for pessimism, since cooperation among factions is rare and in some cases would be undesirable. I will argue for an alternative view. Rhetoric is neither cooperative nor competitive; instead, it is a technology for civic coordination. Drawing from classical and contemporary examples, I show how rhetorical performances intervene to change the world within which citizens strive for their diverse ends. These changes constrain choice, forcing acknowledgement of the civic norms which allow us to live together in the space between friendship and enmity.

Submission

Contributors should submit an extended abstract of the paper (maximum 2 pages excluding references) using the format required for the conference program. Submitted abstracts should give full names and contact details for all authors. Formatting instructions, as well as the style and sample files, are available here:

Abstracts should be submitted in PDF format through our dedicated EasyChair site no later than 15th July 2018:

Submissions will be reviewed by members of the programme committee. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 27 July 2018. At least one author of each accepted abstract must register for the conference.

We consider a post-conference publication of full papers in a peer reviewed, internationally renown journal of argumentation, yet the details will be given later.

The MET-RhET fees include conference materials, lunch and coffee breaks. If you only register to a workshop and would like to attend the Gala Dinner, you have an option to check a box in the registration form to add the Gala Dinner ticket to your registration fee. The gala dinner will take place on Sat 15th Sept.

At least one of the authors of each accepted paper is required to attend the workshop and to present the paper.
